Next thing she knows there is a horned purple demon in her room! They share an unbelievable (literally, she thought it was all a dream) night together. Come morning she sends him on his way so she can return to her boring life. Unfortunately, the universe had other plans.
I loved the rom com feel of the story. I don't encounter that a lot in sci-fi romance and romantasy. The female lead is also a black woman, and I love seeing the diversity. I don't know if it's just me, but I don't find a lot of black female characters in sci-fi and fantasy romances. It's actually a good sign in a series if at least one of the female protagonists is black. The books tend to have their own unique stories and themes. The series Mate Hunt, which I'll review soon, is a great example where having BIPOC female leads foreshadows that it's going to have some good diversity in story and themes.
I find the typical damsel in distress annoying, but there's little of that here. Yes, she encounters things she as a mere mortal can't defeat, but she doesn't go down without a fight! Much to her demon boyfriend's disapproval. There are some interesting curveballs that I didn't see coming at first as Rayna comes into her strengths. Her boyfriend also does a lot of growing to become the perfect match for her.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
Would I date a demon boyfriend IRL?....Let's just say I'm leaving the candles and essential oils easily accessible, just in case.
Jessica Cage's second book of this series is being released in March 2025. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it!
